Background of the Study:
Screen time, which includes the use of smartphones, computers, and television, has surged with the advent of digital technology, particularly among youth and working adults. In Kwara State, increased screen time is emerging as a significant public health issue due to its potential impact on mental health. Excessive screen exposure has been associated with a range of mental health problems, including anxiety, depression, and reduced attention span (Okeke, 2023). The phenomenon is particularly pronounced among adolescents and young adults, who are heavy users of social media and digital entertainment. Extended screen time can disrupt sleep patterns, reduce face-to-face social interactions, and contribute to sedentary lifestyles—all of which negatively affect mental well-being (Aminu, 2024).

In Kwara State, the proliferation of digital devices has transformed daily routines and social interactions. While technology offers numerous benefits, it also poses risks when usage is excessive or unregulated. Studies suggest that high levels of screen time are linked to increased stress and poorer mental health outcomes. Despite these findings, there is limited localized research examining the specific relationship between screen time and mental health in Kwara State. Understanding this dynamic is essential for designing interventions that promote balanced technology use and mental well-being (Ibrahim, 2025). This study seeks to investigate how screen time impacts mental health among various age groups in Kwara State, with the aim of providing evidence-based recommendations for public health policies and individual behavioral changes.

Statement of the Problem:
In Kwara State, excessive screen time is increasingly recognized as a contributing factor to deteriorating mental health, yet the extent of its impact remains underexplored. Many individuals, especially adolescents and young adults, spend prolonged hours on digital devices for entertainment, social interaction, and work, leading to symptoms such as anxiety, depression, and sleep disturbances (Umar, 2023). The pervasive use of social media and online platforms may also contribute to feelings of isolation and low self-esteem, exacerbating mental health issues. Despite growing concerns, current public health initiatives in Kwara State have not sufficiently addressed the negative effects of excessive screen time. The lack of clear guidelines and educational campaigns on healthy digital habits leaves individuals vulnerable to the adverse impacts of digital overuse. This problem is further compounded by limited mental health resources, making it difficult for affected individuals to receive timely support. There is a critical need to systematically evaluate the impact of screen time on mental health in Kwara State and develop targeted interventions that encourage balanced digital behavior, thereby improving mental health outcomes and overall quality of life.

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To assess the average screen time among different age groups in Kwara State.
  2. To examine the relationship between screen time and mental health outcomes such as anxiety and depression.
  3. To recommend strategies for promoting healthier digital habits.

Research Questions:

  1. What are the prevalent screen time patterns among residents in Kwara State?
  2. How does increased screen time correlate with mental health issues?
  3. What interventions can effectively mitigate the negative mental health impacts of excessive screen time?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. H1: Excessive screen time is significantly associated with higher levels of anxiety and depression.
  2. H2: Adolescents are more adversely affected by high screen time compared to other age groups.
  3. H3: Educational interventions on healthy digital habits will reduce the negative mental health impacts.

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study focuses on urban and semi-urban populations in Kwara State. Limitations include self-reported screen time data and rapidly evolving digital media trends.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Screen Time: The duration of exposure to digital devices such as smartphones, computers, and televisions.
  • Mental Health Outcomes: Measures of psychological well-being including levels of anxiety and depression.
  • Digital Habits: Patterns of using digital technology.
